Open office is a great suite of office tools and it is very similar to Microsoft Office but it is free.

The differences are the names of the actual programs, and when you save you should "save as" and pick to save file type as "microsoft 98/2000/XP" format that way if you send your work out to someone else they will be able to open it if there using MS Office.

In this case this is one of the few times I recommend using a pay for program.
